No-Frills Chelsea Will Do for Mourinho

"PA"

Birmingham 0 Chelsea 1

By Ian Parkes, PA Sport

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

That was the warning from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to the rest of the Barclays Premiership after his side stumbled and bumbled their way to a second successive 1-0 victory, over Birmingham yesterday.

It was far from pretty, underlined by the 69th-minute winner from Joe Cole which took a deflection off City defender Martin Taylor.

Yet this would appear to be the Chelsea ethos under Mourinho – forget the performance; it is the result that counts.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce appeared to have seen little to his liking, delivering a damning verdict when he observed: “You saw how the Chelsea manager played last year with Porto. I don’t think he is going to change his beliefs.

“He will do what he has to do to win a football match. I don’t think he is even remotely bothered about trying to entertain.

“But at the end of the day he has two 1-0 wins under his belt and he has been here a week. The one thing I wanted was a result. He has it; I haven’t – and it hurts.”

As far as Mourinho is concerned, his Chelsea team will be built on other qualities – if not yet entertainment value – needed to win trophies. Team spirit, strength of character and backbone are the ingredients the new coach wants.

“Maybe you think we didn’t play so well, but I prefer to say Birmingham played really well – and because of that we had to fight,” he said.

“I am really pleased with the spirit of my team. They played when they had to play; they fought when they had to fight and adapted to the style of play of their opponents.

“I can understand you are waiting for the strikers to score goals. But for me as a coach, I am really pleased when I see strikers defending as well as mine did.

“When I have a team with this spirit and with everybody ready to work for a result, it is a fantastic step.

“After all, you don’t start building a house with the roof. The base of my team is the spirit, group concept, tactical organisation and discipline, the effort and the commitment and the ambition that every single player has.

“Maybe it is normal (in England), but for me what was fantastic was that five minutes before kick-off players who were not in the team were calling their team-mates on their mobiles to wish them well in the game.

“With that spirit we go to win, and if people think we are not playing well and yet we are winning then they should be afraid when we do start to play well.”

Part of Mourinho’s argument against him being ‘defensive’ was borne out by the fact he replaced Geremi yesterday with a more attack-minded player in Cole, whose introduction gave Chelsea fresh impetus.

Up to that point Birmingham had run the game, were nearly always first to the tackle and to the loose ball – and created the opportunities to win.

But their failing, as Bruce conceded, was they did not take any of the gilt-edged chances that came their way.

“Sometimes football gives you a kick in the teeth, and we were given one because we certainly deserved something out of the game,” said the Birmingham boss.

Although naturally disappointed, Bruce remains optimistic for the remainder of the season.

“If we keep playing like that then we will win more than we lose,” he predicted.

“You just need that little bit of luck, or cutting edge, or whatever it is to finish a team off – and by their reaction you could see Chelsea were mighty relieved because they know they have got out of jail.

“But since first coming into the Premier League a couple of years ago, from what I have witnessed we are far better now than we were then.

“We need that devilment in us that means when we create chances we stick them away. You have to do that to win games.”
Defensive style key for Chelsea

By AP

LONDON -- Joe Cole's 68th-minute goal gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory yesterday over Birmingham, making Jose Mourinho's side the first to win the opening two matches of the season. Chelsea has yet to yield a goal in two games, a conservative, defensive fashion of play that is already being criticized by some fans. It's the same style that brought Mourinho the Champions League title last season with FC Porto.

Chelsea knocked off Manchester United in the season-opener a week ago 1-0.

Mourinho addressed the criticism directly, saying winning was No. 1 and style was secondary. He said chief executive Peter Kenyon and owner Roman Abramovich had only one goal.

"When Mr. Kenyon and Mr. Abramovich spoke to me for the first time, they were asking about results. They want to win the big thing. They want to put Chelsea as one of the biggest clubs in the world."

"I can wait for more criticism next week, but that's because we are on top of the league."

Mourinho lauded the team play of his millionaire stars.

"I told the players, without a big spirit and big motivation, there is no chance to win," he said

"People still speak about money and stars and players coming from the moon. But I tell you it is very difficult to have top players fighting like my players are fighting.

"The quality of football will come, that will arrive. But it is better to win 1-0 than lose 4-5. To lose 4-5, I'm not the right man."

Mourinho addressed the criticism directly, saying winning was No. 1 and style was secondary

eben!

The base of my team is the spirit, group concept, tactical organisation and discipline, the effort and the commitment and the ambition that every single player has.
